Chapter 6: Helping out

Garron’s view

That strange lady came back today with a strange hammer.

Garron:
“I’ve never even heard tales of a hammer like this. This sort of thing would be considered a priceless relic, I can’t pay for this.”

Ariel:
“I don’t need payment. I just can’t help but want to make things when I see ways to improve stuff. I’ve actually got another idea for the furnace.”
*Pulls out a large piece of brown cloth, and wraps it around the base of the furnace*

Garron:
“Ah? Suddenly the room doesn’t feel as hot. Did the furnace cool down? It looks the same as always.”

Ariel:
“I made something to trap the heat inside the furnace. It’s not very strong, but it should be enough to both increase the amount of heat in the furnace, and reduce the heat of the room.”

Garron:
“Oh, that sounds good. I really don’t know how to thank you.”

Ariel:
“Just make good use of it! That’s all.”

Garron’s View
Wow, is she some kind of angel sent by god? I really hope nothing bad happens to her. Such an innocent and kind girl is bound to be taken advantage of by people of ill intent. Not much I can do about it, except pray. I’ll definitely pray for her safety.

Meanwhile:

Innkeeper:
“Hey, Julian, how did you manage to find such an Angel?”

Julian:
“Huh? Oh, you mean Ariel? Isn’t Angel a bit of an exaggeration?”

Innkeeper:
“She’s so beautiful! It’s no exaggeration!”

Julian:
“Eh, while she’s far too clean to be a commoner, if she were at noble’s ball, she’d not stand out at all. Honestly, Helen, you could probably out do her if you had the wealth of a noble.”

Helen:
“Oh you flatter me. Does that mean you’ve seen even prettier ladies then?”

Julian:
“Certainly. Though I fear their personalities were quite awful. Most ladies of the court are dangerous. A dumb noble doesn’t usually last long.”

Helen:
“Are you speaking from experience?”

Julian:
“Yeah. I’m probably one of those dumb nobles. I had a chance and blew it, and those rotten bastards got me kicked out with nothing more than a little courtesy stipend.”

Helen:
“You still haven’t told me how you found Ariel.”

Julian:
“Jealous?”

Helen:
“I’ve got a husband.”

Julian:
“Well… I just sorta found her out in the grassy fields.”

Helen:
“The fields full of slimes? A pretty lady like that just appearing in the fields? You sure you aren’t making this up?”

Julian:
“I’m not! I just saw her while hunting slimes! Really!”

Helen:
*sigh* “I believe you. You’re not a good enough liar to fool me. Still, unless god sent her, there’s no reason for a lady to just appear in the wilds like that. Heh, maybe she is an Angel, sent to help you get your fool head on straight.”

Julian:
“Now you’re the one spouting nonsense.”

Ariel’s view

After helping out the smith, I realize I really have nothing left to do in this town. There’s just nothing here. A smith, a watch tower, some guards and a barracks, a general store, and an inn with a restaurant and bar. Reminds me of some of the small towns in video games. I can’t really think of this place as anything other than a military outpost.

I don’t really have any interest in trying the food. It’s unlikely to be much good if the level of technology is any indication. Sadly, I can’t do much to change that. I don’t know how to make spices or food. It should be possible, but I don’t feel like bothering to figure it out right now. Thankfully, as a monster I don’t need to eat or drink though I get the feeling there may be reasons for doing so.

Perhaps I should just start heading for the next town.
