“See anything you like miss?”
Ariel:
“Oh, I’m just looking for the moment. I’m not familiar with what’s sold here.”
Shopkeeper:
“Well, you won’t find any better weapons or armor in town than in my shop.”
Ariel:
“With how small the town is, I’d be surprised if there was any other weapons or armor for sale in town.”
Shopkeeper:
“Hehe, true.” *turns to Julian* “You here for anything? Or, just escorting the young miss?”
Julian:
“Oh, no, I don’t need anything. Just making sure she’s alright.”
Shopkeeper:
“Your family put you up to this?”
Julian:
“What? No! No, Garron, I just saw her out in the fields.”
Garron (shopkeeper):
“You mean to tell me you just randomly found some noble lady out in the fields? If you’re gonna make up a bullshit story, make a better one. You’re the only noble who lives in this town, why else would she be here if because of you?”
Ariel:
(Hmmm… I think I can design a simple sword. Make it clear so it’s pretty, lightweight, very sharp… can’t forget durability…)
“Excuse me? How much could you pay me for this sword?”
Garron (shopkeeper):
“Eh? Wha!? What kind of sword is this? I’ve never seen such a thing!”
*picks up sword and examines it*
“While the balance isn’t great, it’s very pretty. Is it alright if we test it out a bit?”
Ariel:
“Sure, that’s fine.”
---
Garron’s view:
What the heck is this? I’ve never seen a material so clear and so strong. It’s like glass, but it doesn’t break. It’s also a better sword than anything in my shop. Testing it on some wood, made that pretty clear. While the balance isn’t right, it’s incredibly sharp and light. A nobleman might pay a fortune for something like this… if only I knew one who wasn’t a poor cheapskate.
---
Garron:
“Hey, Julian, how much money do you have?”
Julian:
“Huh? Why?”
Garron:
“Try this sword, and you’ll see why I’m asking.”
Julian:
“Eh? This sword is amazing!... oh! I see!” *turns to Ariel* “I can offer three small gold for this.”
Ariel:
“All right, thank you. Would it be possible to get one of the gold in smaller change? I’m lacking in small coin.”
Julian:
“Certainly, though I need to go back home to get my savings out.” *leaves*
Garron:
“So, you really aren’t related to him?”
Ariel:
“No, I’m not.”
Garron:
“I don’t suppose you’d be willing to tell me where you got that sword?”
Ariel:
“I’d like to keep that a secret for now. In fact I’d prefer it if no one knows that sword came from me.”
Garron:
“For now eh? So that means you might share it later? If I kept it all a secret, would you be able to get me more items like that?”
Ariel:
“I could make some, yes.”
Garron:
“Make?”
Ariel:
“Ah! Ooops. I… uh…”
Garron:
“I won’t tell anyone. I’d be interested in purchasing more goods from you though. I’ll be discreet.”
Ariel:
“What would you like?”
Garron:
“Can you make a rapier? Like the one over there.” *points*
Ariel:
“I think so.”
*Picks the rapier up, and stares at it for a while before putting it back. Starts making odd finger motions in the air, then pulls a clear rapier from her hand, just like the one she’d been looking at.*
Garron:
“Ho, so that’s how it works.”
Ariel:
“It’s… a unique skill.”
Garron:
“I’ll give you 3 small gold for this.”
Ariel:
“Thank you, did you make everything in here yourself?”
Garron:
“Yeah, I work in the back when there aren’t any customers to talk to. Not a whole lot of demand in this tiny town though. Most of my money is from low ranking nobles like that Julian fellow, trying to become heroes.”
Ariel:
“How does that work?”
Garron:
“Well, every decade or so, the Fenix church announces the need for a hero to stop the demon lord from attacking. At that time, people will try to prove themselves by conquering dungeons, and then the god of light will send a priest to aid the chosen hero. The hero is usually granted the kingdom’s best equipment to go and fight the demon lord, if they don’t already have better. If they take too long, eventually demon armies will attack… wait, shouldn’t you already know this? Unless you’re from the mainland, everyone knows this.”
Ariel:
“Ah, I had a rather sheltered upbringing, and don’t really know much of anything.”
Garron:
“That’s alright, I don’t mean to pry. Say, while your swords are good, I can tell there’s room for improvement. How about I show you how I make swords and teach you a bit about it?”
Ariel:
“Okay, that sounds interesting.”
Julian:
“I’m back! Sorry for the wait!”
Ariel:
“Thank you for the money.”
Garron:
“I’m just about to show this lady a little about sword smithing, and teach her a thing or two so she can better identify the good ones from the bad ones. You wanna join?”
Julian:
“Sure!”
Ariel:
“Ah, before I forget, Julian, could you keep it a secret that the sword came from me? If anyone asks, just say you bought it from this guy.” *points at Garron*
Julian:
“Uh, sure! Okay. Not a problem. Is there a reason you don’t want to be known?”
Ariel:
“I’m just worried about what would happen if someone came after me to try and get more swords like that one.”
Julian:
“Oh, right, right, okay, got it!”

While I know this was meant as a means for me to learn how to make better swords, I ended up thinking more about how to help Garron make better swords. Perhaps a lighter hammer with an impact multiplier effect could provide the needed heavy blows with less effort.
I doubt I could improve the furnace, my skill with fire magic isn’t really high enough, unless it’s just to create a temperature measurement and regulation device. A bucket that never ran out of water for quenching might useful, but it seems like it’d just be pointlessly attention getting…
Maybe a sturdy anvil to go with the hammer. It’d be no good if the hammer was too strong and the anvil got damaged. I think that’s what I’ll try making tonight.

Wow, it’s really hot in here. Feels like I’m sweating buckets. Ariel doesn’t seem at all bothered though. Is her clothing enchanted to keep her cool? Wish I could afford something like that.

Innkeeper’s view
Today I saw the most beautiful lady I’d ever seen. She was so clean and pure; blue hair like looking at a clear summer sky. Fair skin that shone with a brilliance not seen out here where everyone is always covered in dirt. Her pure white dress looked like it was brand new, and had never been worn before. It was amazing.
Ariel:
“Excuse me ma’am? How much is a room?”
Innkeeper:
“Ah! Yes, um, it’s one small silver per night for a single bed room.”

How embarrassing, I almost forgot to do my job!

Ariel’s view
Not much of interest happened that night. I made a hammer, and gave it a boring color to disguise it as an ordinary hammer. It was made lighter than a normal hammer though, with magically improved impact power. I don’t think it’s strong enough to warrant needing a special anvil, so I skipped that. While working, I did develop an idea for improving the furnace, but I’d need to see the furnace again to get the size and shape right for it.
The night was long enough to make a ground pad out of foam tubes stuck together and wrapped in a cover. It’s probably a better ground pad than can normally be gotten. I’ll need to make a sleeping bag later.
